Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Manual Lymphatic Drainage Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is an important part of a multi-faceted program for the management of lymphedema.  Lymphedema is a serious condition that occurs when the lymphatic system has congenital defects (primary) or has been compromised as a result of trauma, disease, surgery or radiation (secondary).  Lymphedema is a protein rich accumulation in the tissues. This protein rich fluid can increase the occurrence of cellulitis.  As lymphatic massage can stimulate the immune system, MLD will enhance the reduction of fluid and proteins that accumulate when the system has been compromised. MLD is performed in a systematic approach that is most effective to stimulate the lymphatic flow.  MLD is a treatment technique that should be performed by a trained lymphatic therapist.
